India’s major low-cost airline, IndiGo, has announced a significant step in its international expansion strategy, with a new agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways.
The airline has entered an arrangement with Norse Atlantic, securing a damp lease agreement for a Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This strategic induction, currently scheduled for March 2025, will bolster IndiGo’s capacity and offer passengers more international travel options.
Boeing 787-9 Induction in March
The 787-9 is slated to arrive in India within the next few weeks. Following its induction, it is expected to commence line operations in March 2025. The initial agreement spans six months, with the possibility of extension up to 18 months, pending regulatory approvals.
Both IndiGo and Norse Atlantic Airways have expressed their commitment to exploring further extensions, subject to regulatory clearance. The two carriers are actively seeking opportunities to increase their collaboration through additional aircraft contracts.
This latest partnership underscores IndiGo’s dedication to expanding its global presence. It caters to the increasing demand for international travel to and from India.
The damp lease agreement provides IndiGo with a flexible and efficient way to augment its long-haul capabilities while it awaits delivery of its own wide-body aircraft.
IndiGo Airbus A350 Orders
Looking ahead, IndiGo has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900 wide-body aircraft, with an option for an additional 70. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027, further solidifying IndiGo’s commitment to long-haul international travel.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, emphasized the significance of this partnership within the airline’s broader expansion strategy.
“As part of our vision to significantly expand our international network, we are pleased to confirm this damp lease of one Boeing 787-9 aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways,” said Elbers.
“Our objective is to transform into a global aviation powerhouse by 2030. We will meanwhile maintain our strong roots and continuous growth within India. This strategic move is a crucial step in that direction.”
