With startup & ecomm rush, B-schools see a busy hiring season

Bengaluru | New Delhi: Job offers from startups and ecommerce companies at the country’s prestigious business schools surged this hiring season, with graduates of the Class of 2025 being wooed with attractive pay packages to help drive growth and expansion plans.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), XLRI-Xavier School of Management, Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon, Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) Delhi, and Institute of Management Technology (IMT) Ghaziabad were among the B-schools that saw offers pour in from companies such as Zomato, Flipkart, Amazon, Navi, Myntra, PhonePe, Ola, Nykaa and Swiggy, among others.

Business expansion plans and the push towards digital transformation drove hiring across domains, including product management, growth and marketing, operations, business analytics, sales, tech, finance and human resources (HR), covering entry- to mid-level leadership roles.

Quicksell, Pluckk, Ather Energy, Oyo, Purplle, Juspay, Blinkit, Meesho, Zepto, InsuranceDekho, NoBroker and BlueStone were the other firms that showed eagerness to tap B-school talent. “The sector has been quite bullish in terms of hiring, largely driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and technology development, along with the increasing number of users in the ecommerce sector,” said Kirti Sharma, chairperson of GP Placements & PGDM (IB) at MDI Gurgaon.

The institute said the number of offers made by startups and ecommerce firms, including Amazon and Oyo, was 39% higher compared with 2024, with pay packages ranging between ₹20 lakh per annum and ₹54 lakh per annum.

Flying Start

Backend Operations
Roopak Kumar Gupta, chairperson, CARE at IIM Kozhikode, said job placements by ecommerce companies, particularly the big ones, saw steady growth, with more emphasis on tech roles, customer service, and backend operations. “Hiring at quick-commerce companies surged due to growing internet penetration, rising consumer demand, digital payment adoption, and the need for tech-driven solutions to support rapid delivery services,” he said.

At IIM Ahmedabad, the number of offers from fintech companies was up by 40% compared with last year while that from consumer tech firms was higher by 800%.

In the laterals placement process, Navi was among the top recruiters with 10 offers. As reported by ET earlier, at IIM Mumbai, ecommerce and quick-commerce companies hired more, with the top offer from Blinkit being ₹30 lakh per annum, Meesho’s being ₹49 lakh, Zepto’s being ₹33.5 lakh, and Delhivery offering ₹24 lakh per annum.

Startups and ecommerce players say they are actively engaging with B-schools. “Our campus hiring strategy this year was bigger than ever,” said Niharika Mohanty, vice president of HR at Eternal, the parent company of Zomato.

B-school graduates accounted for a significant portion. Eternal hired more than 500 graduates overall across tech, product, analytics, strategy, design, operations, sales, supply chain and sustainability.

“We strategically enhanced our talent density efforts across both emerging and metro markets, unlocking exceptional potential from campuses nationwide,” said Mohanty.

At InsuranceDekho, hiring numbers increased by 83% compared with last year. “This is driven by our organisation’s expansion, increased demand for strategic and business-critical roles, and the growing preference of B-school graduates for dynamic opportunities in the startup ecosystem,” said Divya Mohan, chief human resources officer at InsuranceDekho.
